INTERVIEW WITH DADDY WARREN
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about your plans for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter?
DADDY WARREN: Plans? Oh nothing much really. I’m not much of a drinker so St. Patty’s day will be like any other day, unless I’m teaching a class, then I’ll wear green. Easter Sunday will be spent at the Eagle Tavern supporting my club, the Golden Gate Guards as we sponsor the beer bust.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us little about yourself.
DADDY WARREN: Well, let’s see… I’m 40 years old, 6’3, and 250lbs with a shaved head, mustache and goatee. I consider myself a kind, sociable and community-minded leather man living in the beautiful city by the bay, San Francisco. Born in Savannah, Georgia and raised in the Washington, DC area I moved to the Bay Area in 1998. I’m also a proud African-American. I’ve never been married, no kids and definitely no grandkids! I’m a very loving uncle to several nieces and two nephews.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about your dating life.
DADDY WARREN: I’m very single and very available! I do enjoy being single, but there are times where I feel the absence of someone to share my life as well as my interests.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us why you identify in the category of “Daddy”.
DADDY WARREN: I guess in the beginning of my journey in leather, I saw myself as just a leather man. I didn’t concern myself with other identities within that because I felt that I expressed myself as a top and an active member within the community. It seemed that others identified my stature or aligned sexual appeal with being a “Daddy”. It took a while to truly understand and accept that identification, but truly became most aware of how much I connected to it when I ran for San Francisco Leather Daddy XxiV last year. Calling me “Sir” or “Daddy” suits me well, however I don’t identify myself as “Master” since I don’t and have no desire to own a slave. I’ve got enough keeping me busy right now!
LEATHERBEAR: What languages do you speak other than English?
DADDY WARREN: I can speak enough Spanish to get laid in a pinch!
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about your titles and the experiences you encountered during your leather journey.
DADDY WARREN: I hold the title of San Francisco Leather Daddy XXIV, which is considered a permanent title. We have a little saying, “Once a San Francisco Leather Daddy, always a San Francisco Leather Daddy”. That’s why we’re given numbers and not years like other titles. I assure you that this journey wasn’t one where I thought I’d run for a title or win it in the end, but the experience isn’t one that I’ll ever forget. I chose to ultimately run because of those Daddies who gave so much back to San Francisco’s Leather Community. I thought that if I did win, that it would be my duty to carry on the traditions of charitable fundraising and service, examples that gentlemen like our founder, Daddy Alan Selby and Daddy Philip Turner left as our legacy.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about your hobbies.
DADDY WARREN: My hobbies include traveling, anything technology related. I love my laptops, yes, I have two of my own and one for work. I have a Slingbox, Tivo, an Ipod Classic and I’ll be getting an iPhone later this summer. I’m a big kid when it comes to my tech toys. I love music and also enjoy a good audio book.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us how your family and co-workers accept or don’t accept your leather lifestyle.
DADDY WARREN: Well that’s an interesting question. My sisters had the pleasure of meeting my last boy and learned a great deal about my leather lifestyle. It’s really difficult to attempt explaining it all to my mother, but it doesn’t matter because above everything, she loves me no matter what and that is most important. My father died in 2002, but what I do know of his sexual nature, I’m sure he would have understood! My manager knows about my involvements in the leather community and is very supportive. It’s rather difficult to work in San Francisco, have a public life and keep it from being exposed in my professional life. There are several gay folks working in my office so of course it was brought to my attention whenever my face showed up in the Bay Area Reporter or the Bay Times, our local LGBT newspapers.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about your wildest leather fantasy.
DADDY WARREN: Fantasy? Well, I’d like to think that I’m a man of action and any fantasies I’ve had, I’ve executed! Of course, I’m up to create some new ones or help fulfill hot boy’s fantasy!
LEATHERBEAR: What qualities about yourself do you like the most? The least?
DADDY WARREN: The qualities I find about myself that are most endearing to me are my ability to speak my mind. There was a time where that wasn’t something I was able to do. I enjoy getting to know people. I also enjoy seeing people achieve success and happiness. What I like the least about myself is that I do procrastinate. I somehow need to get inspired to do certain things, but more often than not, I rise to the occasion to get the job done.
LEATHERBEAR: Do you travel outside of the United States? How often?
DADDY WARREN: I have traveled to Europe, and of course, Canada and Mexico, but I have aspirations to travel more extensively through Europe in the near future. I haven’t been overseas in five years, but I’ve recently been to Alaska twice, which was a wonderful experience.
LEATHERBEAR: How long have you been involved in the leather community?
DADDY WARREN: I’ve been actively involved in the leather community since 2002, but prior to that, I started discovering my interest in leather in 1997 while living in Atlanta where I found that I was most attracted to men in leather. That year I attended my first IML and that was all she wrote! After that I moved to San Francisco where I found my leather-self and my leather family shortly thereafter.
LEATHERBEAR: Do you have a dungeon or play space? If you do, tell us about it. If you don’t, tell us how you would design your dungeon?
DADDY WARREN: No, I don’t have a dungeon, but if I were to have one, it would include a spanking table, a fuck bench with restraints and HDTVs to play hot porn. Strangely enough, I’m not all that fond of slings because it seems to impede my connection with the bottom, although it can be fun in a public play space.
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about the leather events you have attended. Where were they?
DADDY WARREN: Being in San Francisco, I’ve attended every Folsom Street Fair and Up Your Alley Street Fairs since 1998, IML and my favorite MAL – Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend in Washington, DC. I attended LUEY Weekend in Houston in 2006, which I’m planning to do again in 2009. Those Houston leather folk know how to throw a party!
LEATHERBEAR: Tell us about the upcoming LLC XII. Give us details.
DADDY WARREN: I’m a National Board Member of the Leather Leadership Conference, which is being held in San Francisco, April 11-13, 2008. LLC XXII’s theme is “Arouse”. The Local Organizing Committee has put together an extraordinary array of workshops to appeal to newcomers to the leather community and those veterans who have needs that extend in the area of “graduate” level learning to support their ability to become better leaders. Visit www.leatherleadership.com for more details.
LEATHERBEAR: Have you been involved in any special events that have helped to foster the leather experience or promote the leather community?
DADDY WARREN: I’ve been involved with several special events in San Francisco. I was co-chair of Leather Levi Weekend in 2006, which is an event that supports newcomers to the leather community by providing a 4-day weekend of workshops and demos help find their kink/BDSM interest. It offers tracks on spirituality and leather as well as motorcycle events.
LEATHERBEAR: Where can we find you online? Do you have e-mail or a web site you’d like to share with us?
WARREN: You can find me online at: sfleatherdaddy24@yahoo.com and additional information about my organizations, the Golden Gate Guards at: www.ggguards.com and the Leather Leadership Conference at: www.leatherleadership.com.
We'd like to thank Daddy Warren for taking the time to speak to all the Readers of WVQN LeatherBear. Hope all of you consider visiting him in San Francisco at the upcoming Leather Leadership Conference XXII April 11-13. It should be an "Arousing" weekend.
